How Yoga Helps with Anxiety

One of my best tried and true, consistently effective methods of dealing with my anxiety is yoga. Yoga helps with anxiety. There is not a doubt in my mind. How? Let's get into it...

Does Yoga Really Help with Anxiety?

Maybe not for everyone, but I would genuinely be surprised to find someone that doesn't find at least some anxiety relief with yoga.

I started my yoga practice nearly 10 years ago. My anxiety had gotten so bad that it was difficult for me to leave my house, let alone workout. My doctor strongly encouraged me to make a priority of getting in some daily movement. Cardio and weight lifting felt very overwhelming at the time so they suggested I start doing yoga.

After a few weeks, I noticed I didn't want to start hyperventilating whenever I tried doing cardio. It was working! Now, I notice my anxiety start to increase if I don't do yoga at least 5 days a week. From my perspective, yoga really does help with anxiety.

How Does Yoga Help with Anxiety?

Yoga encourages deep breathing. Most yoga practices are paired with complementary breathing wherein you breathe through the yoga flow and movements. This type of deep breathing can help reduce stress, tension and adrenaline.
