How I Shifted my Thinking Around a Morning Routine

If you're anything like me, you probably have an affinity for a very slow morning. Personally I like to stay in bed for 30 minutes to an hour, slowing get up, grab a coffee and go through my emails and messages from the comfort of my own couch. Then after about an hour to an hour and a half I like to start getting ready for work. Needless to say, I am NOT a morning person.

When my coach suggested I start a morning routine I scoffed. That's insane, I thought. I already have a hard enough time in the mornings, now you want me to add stuff?! Just try it, she said. Give it a solid 5 days and see how you feel. Here's how it went:

I mapped out my morning routine as follows:

  • Take 10-15 minutes to 'wake up'.

  • Grab a coffee and celery juice or ACV.

  • Journal & set the days intentions

  • Stretch 10-15 minutes

The first couple of days were ok, not as terrible as I'd imagined, but not great either. It was about the 3rd day when I realized I was having just as slow of a morning as before, I was just doing something productive. That's when everything changed. It was as if suddenly a lightbulb went off. I realized I could have the exact type of morning I wanted while being productive.

Now, I am certainly not perfect and I don't go through this morning routine everyday, but most days I feel I am pretty successful, and the days I'm not are just other days when it didn't work out. But either way I don't have this dark cloud hanging over me that is a morning routine. I know that going through these steps makes me feel A LOT better. I know that it's really not that difficult. And I know that the effects last all day long.
